Outta Mind - Otoh feat. Kendrick Ryan & Bedows
Classic Chicago Soul in the Underground
Making his Street Noise debut is Chicago musician Otto Marloft, known by his artist name Otoh. A graduate from Lincoln Park high school, Otoh attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for 2 semesters before returning home to Chicago to pursue a career in music. Producer, singer, rapper, keyboardist and percussionist, Otoh is a breath of fresh air for those in search of the classic musical soul that put Chicago on the map.
Influenced heavily by the likes of Mac Miller, Mick Jenkins and producer Kaytranada, Otoh dabbles in a variety of genres whilst painting vivid images through musical brilliance.
Just recently, Otoh dropped the mellow masterpiece “Outta Mind” with fellow musicians Kendrick Ryan and Bedows. Listening to the track, it is evident great care was taken in its composition which is no surprise since the record has been in the works since January. The bioluminescent chord progressions that lull the song into a state of harmony were recorded by Otoh, who sent them over to Bedows. Bedows threw down the drum beat, and the project took life.
Otoh waited to write his verse until hearing Kendrick Ryan’s verse, who used her seductive voice and distinct songwriting to compliment Otoh’s unique production and wordplay. “I take a lot of influence from Robert Glasper” Otoh shared over the phone. It is quite hard to compare Otoh to any one artist, which is what makes “Outta Mind” a triumph when paying homage to some of music’s current pioneers in production and genre crossing.
Mixed by Lon Renzell of Them People (a Chicago production group), “Outta Mind” is a refreshing new spin to the classic jazz - influenced hip/hop movement that propelled artists like Mac Miller and Mick Jenkins to the tops of streaming charts.
“Outta Mind” is available on all streaming platforms.
